wywy, which develops social television applications, narrowly clinched the coveted title after being selected from a shortlist of ten German start-ups.

wywy has developed simple, automated tools to let its users interact with live content being broadcast on TV. Its ‘second-screen’ applications allow TV viewers to comment and react to programmes, as well as capturing real-time data on viewing trends aimed at market research and commercial use.

Cipio Partners purchased its stake in wywy earlier this year alongside company founders Tobias Schmidt and Andreas Schroeter and merged existing portfolio company Idioma Solutions into wywy.

Idioma Solutions, an Israel-based broadcast TV monitoring firm, was part of an investment portfolio that Cipio Partners acquired from Edmond de Rothschild Private Equity. Following this acquisition, Cipio Partners helped develop a new strategic orientation for the firm and helped identify the new leadership team, before joining forces with Schmidt and Schroeter.

Werner Dreesbach, Managing Partner, commented: “Idioma Solutions had strong technology, but to harness its potential in the consumer internet it needed a different strategy and management. We have put the pieces together and are proud to see the team executing so well.”

The deutsche-startups.de awards have been running since 2007. The jury comprised a panel of journalists, independent industry experts and technology investors.
